The Story

This exceptional Bronze Age socketed and loop axe head, dating to approximately 1200–800 BC, represents a fine example of later prehistoric metalworking from Britain. Excavated in Lincolnshire in 1972, the piece has been fully conserved and remains in excellent condition, retaining strong definition and a well-preserved surface. Housed in a display box with a placard of information as detailed here.

Socketed and looped axe heads emerged during the later Bronze Age as a technological advancement, allowing for more secure hafting and improved durability in both utilitarian and martial contexts. Examples of this quality reflect skilled casting techniques and were likely used as practical tools, weapons, or symbols of status within Bronze Age communities.

This axe head was acquired from an old UK private collection and has been professionally conserved, presenting in excellent condition for its age. A highly displayable and academically sound Bronze Age artifact, well suited for advanced collectors of early European weaponry, ancient metallurgy, or prehistoric military implements.
