The Story

This Japanese Samurai Armor grouping dates to the Edo Period during the Tokugawa Shogunate and consists of a kabuto helmet and matching dō breastplate, both constructed from iron plate. The kabuto is formed from an impressive 21 iron plates, reflecting the traditional multi-plate construction associated with higher-quality armor of the period. Both pieces retain their brown lacquered finish, developed to protect the iron while presenting a subdued yet dignified appearance appropriate to Edo-period martial aesthetics.

The dō breastplate is prominently adorned with a large gilt clan mon, signifying allegiance to a samurai family or domain, while the kabuto bears a separate crest representing the individual lineage of its original owner. The presence of distinct family crests on both elements highlights the personal and hereditary significance of the armor, as well as its role beyond mere battlefield utility, serving as a symbol of status, identity, and service within feudal Japan.

A compelling and historically rich example of Edo-period samurai armor, this helmet and breastplate set offers strong appeal to collectors of Japanese arms and armor, Asian antiquities, and museum-quality militaria. The craftsmanship, materials, and heraldic elements together embody the refined martial culture of the Tokugawa era.
